History

The WVU LGBTQ+ Center was established in 2016 to provide education, programming, and advocacy for WVU students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Situated in Academic Affairs and reporting to the Office of the Provost, the LGBTQ+ center supports the university’s larger social justice efforts and land-grant mission. Educational services include trainings, lectures, support of student work and assistance with development of inclusive curriculum.

The center also provides programs and collaborates with units to enhance engagement and retention of members of the LGBTQ+ community. Regarding advocacy, the center’s staff serve as Title IX confidential resources, supporting the community in any related inequity and ensuring inclusive campus policies and practices. Further, the center serves as a social hub and the clearinghouse for campus and community resources. Located at Maple House in the downtown campus, the center offers a safe space where visitors regularly work on projects or meet friends. They also become more acquainted with various campus resources, including but not limited to LGBTQ+ housing, gender-inclusive restrooms, name change forms, student organizations, events, and more.
